CS3 Install Problems are Inexcusable

UPDATE: Additional information on installing CS3 is now available (Thanks to Barry Hills at Adobe!). Please read through the article “Additional Information on Installing CS3″ for help installing CS3 on your computer.

I’ve added a post to the site with info on using Selective Startup Mode under Windows XP to get Creative Suite 3 Web Premium to install. Hopefully it will help some of you that are struggling with getting it on your system. Article: Installing CS3 Premium

Never before have I had this much trouble installing an application that should just work. I’ve done everything from uninstalling the Photoshop CS3 Beta, running the CleanScript for Windows XP and each and every time I try to install Adobe Creative Suite 3 Web Premium I get “component fail” errors. This is COMPLETELY unacceptable.

I’ve wasted way too much time trying to install applications that shouldn’t have had ANY problems at all installing.

I’ve learned a valuable lesson from this: never beta test software from Adobe again. Photoshop CS3 Beta was their first widespread beta test of an application, and it has completely screwed things up for me.

Ugh… I am so disgusted right now.

I feel for ya. I agree with you, apps that cost that much should install themselves.

  2. I do take responsibility in the fact that I knowingly installed beta software – and that there are inherent risks in installing software that isn’t completed. I expect more from Adobe though…

  3. Ben G. says:

Agreed. Adobe has an illustrious history. Frankly, I’m shocked that it’s been such a headache.

  4. Likewise. Given the ease in which previous iterations of the Suite installed, I assumed I wouldn’t have any problems at all… Boy, was I wrong or what?

  5. Ben G. says:

Yeah, but it’s not your fault given the track record of Adobe. No one would have expected problems.

  11. I didn’t have a CS3 beta on my machine, nevertheless even with a clean install of Vista – nada. Will not install on my laptop or desktop.
I restored a clean installation of XP from an image and the CS3 suite installed with no problems.

2 copies of Vista for sale. :o)

  12. I hate to even think I might have to do a clean install of XP on my system in order to get this CS3 up and running on my system…

  15. Jumped through many hoops as advised by Adobe to no avail. The only way I could install the CS3 suite on my laptop with Windows Vista was to do a clean installation of Vista.
I then installed CS3 before doing anything else. Didn’t even install anti-virus.

  18. @hieronymous… You’re not alone. I’m holding off on trying to install it until Adobe posts some sort of fix. I’m not holding my breath, though.

My copy of CS3 has just arrived well 2 days ago I have tried everything except a clean install god I hope I don’t have to do that.

This is the commercial release not even a beta release I can install it on my other computer running windows xp except Fireworks will not work.

Now for me to call Adobe is out of the question I live in New Zealand and if you think after paying good money for a program I am then going to pay my telecom a hefty bill then they can think again.

On my machines I have uninstalled every piece of software related to Macromeadia and Adobe Xp installs but as I said no Fireworks :(

As for Vista on a quad core machine I should have know better as to have two giant companies actually cooperate with each other.

My software provider will not refund me the money as I opened the box how else are you suppose to install software. Even volunteered to take my machine in so they can see I don’t have a copy install come to my house so I am stuck with $100000 of dollars of saoftware that I cannot use.

I’m using XP Pro SP2. It installs fine on my Vista partition, but I can’t use that full-time unfortunately. I’ve spent at least 12 hours trying to get CS3 to install. (If you’re going to fail, fail right away!) I didn’t beta test either, so that isn’t the common factor.

I’m offended that reformat my computer and do a clean OS install is their solution. That has to be a joke.

Reading all these comments is very interesting to me. I really do feel y’all’s pain.

  26. Well, I’m happy to report “SOME” progress… I’ve yet to install the full CS3 Web Premium, but I was able to install Adobe Acrobat 8 Professional… In order to do this on Windows XP Pro SP2 I had to manually update the permissions on a number of keys in my Registry. I’m hoping to do a more thorough write-up of my limited success in the hopes that it helps someone else get a little bit further…

Once I got Acrobat installed, though, the installer went back to business as usual. And it returned no errors that I could diagnose further…

  29. I test software says:

Uh, Its beta software. Did you read your Beta agreement? I’m pretty sure they have something along the lines of “If your system gets screwed your on your own.” or “not intended to be run in a production environment”.

While I feel your pain, next time you feel like testing some beta software buy a copy of Norton Ghost and make a back-up image of your hard disk.

  31. Duh. I have taken responsibility for the fact it was beta software. It doesn’t make it any better, though.

  32. Doesn’t matter about beta – the full market product won’t install easily whether or not you’ve had a beta version installed.
I endorse “I test software”‘s views on imaging. Acronis True Image gets the best reviews. One or the other is indispensible, especially if you’re a tinkerer.
Move your data files to a separate partition or drive to make the image management process even easier.

It’s not beta. I’ve bought FW and DW CS3 and I can not install neither, the installer crashes. This is crappy installer. I have never spent so much time installing something I paid so much!

Where is BSA now? In my head this is called piracy (Adobe pirated me!). And companies are mouning there is so much piracy. They are the biggest pirates.

I “installed” DW CS3 so I installed it on another computer and copied all the files and reg. info to my computer. But that is no installation. Most things work, but not all.

  36. Jean says:

Well I have CS3 up and running on vista ultimate………….I had to uninstall all adobe software then install Cs3.

Dreamweaver was a problem but going into users appsdata and renaming the configuration file to configuration_old then relaunching the problem software cured all.

So now I have Adobe Creative Suite CS3 Web Design Premium up and running.

Hope this may help some people.

  37. Jerry says:

I haven’t mentioned before… I have XP sp2 and I didn’t have any Adobe beta never. In fact I don’t even have any adobe program except adobe reader…

  38. As I’ve said before. If you really want to install this software back up your data files and do a clean Windows installation and install CS3 before anything else.

I know you shouldn’t have to.

    I know it’s a PITA.

But it’s good for your soul and a clean install is something everybody should do once or twice a year anyway.

Do yourself a favour, buy Acronis True Image and take an image when you have it installed and registered.

Move all your data files to a different partition or hard drive first.

Did I mention data backups :o)

I spoke to adobe support for over 1 hour and the man in New Zealand says you should not have to do a clean install. He pointed out to me that it is usually a little piece of software that is causing the problem. So we did a secure safe using this technique http://www.adobe.com/go/kb401454 and then installed Adobe CS3 rebooted the system and deleted the configuration file in C:UsersUSERNAMEAppDataRoamingAdobeDreamweaver 9 which happened to be the plroblem program with me. Then I restarted Dreamweaver adn hey presto all works great. Si I have just installed a copy on my othe computer (Windows XP Pro SP2) and lo and behold Fireworks would not work so I followed the same procedure as stated above except for XP http://www.adobe.com/cfusion/knowledgebase/inde... and hey the programs work there too.
Hope some of this helps some of you.

  53. Yeah, this is more than a little disappointing for a lot of people. On average, since I made this post I’ve had about 140 people a day come to my site because of this post. LOTS of people are having problems, and I can’t believe Adobe hasn’t done a better job of addressing this issue.

There are obvious flaws in the installer, flaws that were NOT present in CS2. I definitely feel your pain Jerry. Have you tried any of the options mentioned in the comments so far?

  54. Jerry says:

Yes, I’ve tried all of them, including your solution. So far only the thing that I modify the installer works but installs nothing. Without this, installer crashes immediately. I have a crash in the application log every time…

Now a moral question: I can install the DW CS3 to my laptop, but I don’t use it for working. I logged the installer process (files and registry) and I was able to move files that were installed and registry values to my main computer. But I can not run the DW.exe, because there is a “licence” problem (seems something was not copied – some Adobe licence protection I guess)…

Now… I guess if I would become a criminal, took a cracked exe and replaced my exe with it I bet 99.9% I would have a DW CS3 working on my machine. The program I paid 50% that USA people just because I am from Europe.

But then… this would make me a criminal, wouldn’t it? ;-/ And another question: Is it criminal to hack a criminal (the second criminal being Adobe selling me program that doesn’t install)? I guess legally it is. But morally? Who knows? I paid for the program…

For the background: I have about 60 programs and I have tested many more trials. Every one but the Adobe CS3 programs I could install. I refuse to spend a week reinstalling my Windows XP because of the obvious flaw in the installer file.

    Thanx for listening

    Jerry

  55. No problem, Jerry. I feel your pain.

Using cracked software is rarely a good idea… You do have a license you paid for, and you’re unable to use the software you bought. I would try to remedy things with Adobe before making any sort of decision in that regard…

The installers dump files all over the place on the system and countless numbers of registry entries. Copying the program from one computer to another probably isn’t impossible, but it’d be difficult to ensure you moved everything over properly.

As to whether it’s okay to install on your laptop as well… As far as I know, Adobe does allow you to install the software on two computers, assuming one is a work computer and another is a home computer/laptop/etc. as long as the software is used by the same user. I’ve done this with Creative Suite, CS2 and CS3 without any problems activating the software.

    Hi there,

What a mess, had the same nightmares, in the end now, I downloaded the 30 Day trial version from their site, and installed it. The first time round I got the same errors as mentioned above. I did find the reason though, which in the end was that my Firewall was precenting a small part of the installer from doing something on the net…so I disabled the firewall for a short moment, and re-installed, it worked 100%, took about 10 minutes to complete, and all the features now work. Then I simply converted the trial ver, to full ver by entering my reg details…

Hope this trick with the firewall helps a bit…

ok, im using xpPro on an intel core2duo HP workstation laptop. (Never had any beta software installed on this machine) First attempt: locked up while installing disc1,crashed and rebooted my machine all by itself. Upon restart, I ran installer again. This time it sat seemingly locked-up on the disc1 install again(but said “repairing shared files”) for about an hour. After that finally asked for next disc. I’m currently on disc3 and crossing my fingers that I’ll get through all this. Though from all the comments here, i gather my positive thinking won’t be enough on its own. So say a little prayer for me will ya, I don’t feel like spending another weekend installing software yet again.

Why not get rid of all this piracy protection crap that has given me (a paying customer) and many others serious install issues every time i try to upgrade, by just requiring us to call adobe, physically tell them our software key, which they would use to give us a verbal install code for that key. Pull all the b.s. out of the installers and just let it roll once you physically call in and present yourself as a paying customer. I don’t care if it calls back once a month to check itself, just let it install the first time!

    Oh sweet! disc4! xing fingers!

I’ve just finished installing all components of the master collection upgrade in almost exactly four hours. Prior to install, I uninstalled both my CS2 and my Studio8. For the CS2 uninstall, it asked whether I wanted to keep activation data on this PC. I selected yes. I’m assuming this is why I didn’t need to type in any of my old program keys… (not sure how it got verification on my old studio8-but maybe it’s a smart installer…sorry i know most of you feel otherwise) And maybe I will get a bunch of activation b.s. thrown at me yet once i try to fire any of these programs up… But the hard part appears to be over.

One thing I did do after the first crash. (while in the process of the second install attempt-and while it appeared locked up “repairing shared files”) I manually shutdown the “vista-like” {desktop search indexer service} which my coworker suggested I install on this xp machine. After I shut that down, a minute later the install starting working again. The {desktop search indexer} is supposed to be dormant while your working-and is something normally only on Vista and maybe it was all coincidence, but either way the rest of the install was real smooth. Just figured I mention that. If your using vista, try shutting down that search indexer just for giggles…

Good luck everyone else. And don’t ever stop the disc installs even if they look like they are locked up… (i had that 1hour wait for disc1)

ok, im using xpPro on an intel core2duo HP workstation laptop.

  84. comment on another post I have here on the site regarding problems with the CS3 installation. Hopefully it will help those of you who are struggling…

One of the most common problems with installation is an incompatibility with older Flash Player installations.

Have you completely removed Flash Player using the following steps?

    http://kb.adobe.com/selfservice/viewContent.do?externalId=tn_14157

Also, make sure you have updated Acrobat to 8.1 (free update).

If that doesn’t work, you should call support since they have a number of updated tech notes and methods to deal with installation related issues and have recently improved the escalation path.

    I hope this helps.

I found the problem you are all having installing CS3 in Vista.
If you need any more help contact me via my web site where I’m more than happy to help you. contact me – http://www.htmlblock.co.uk

    Manually register the jscript.dll file.

    On Windows Vista32:

    1. Choose Start All Programs Accessories.
    2. Right-click the Command icon, choose Run As Administrator, and authenticate.
    3. Navigate to WindowsSystem32.
    4. At the prompt, type regsvr32 jscript.dll and press Enter.
    5. When a dialog box with the message “DllRegisterServer in jscript.dll succeeded” appears, click OK.

    On Windows Vista64:

    1. Choose Start All Programs Accessories.
    2. Right-click the Command icon, choose Run As Administrator, and authenticate.
    3. Navigate to WindowsSysWow64.
    4. At the prompt, type regsvr32 jscript.dll and press Enter.
    5. When a dialog box with the message “DllRegisterServer in jscript.dll succeeded” appears, click OK.

I found the solution to the problem after looking though log files and I found an error with the code 2739. So no cleanup or all that rubbish, just follow steps above and CS3 will install as well as CS2 did!

I too ran into “components failed to install” issues with my copy of the master suite. After fiddling with the Adobe clean-up tool, which failed to do the trick, and the MS installer clean-up tool, which broke my install of Office, I ended up doing a clean reinstall of Vista. The very first thing I did after getting back to the desktop, even before going online, was install CS3 – and it worked. I think if your data is backed up, it’s possibly less of a PITA than some of the pissing about in the registry.

I have spent the last 3 days installing, reinstalling, uninstalling, and on hold w/ Adobe tech support or dealing w/ 5 different techs. After trying nearly everything to install CS3 Master Suite on a XP machine, getting similar errors to those mentioned above, I had to uninstall everything Adobe, run the WinCS3 Clean over and over, and the biggie…uninstall McAfee. The first 4 techs said you had to deactivate it but not uninstall it, the last one said, “oh, that has to go!”…they have a known issue with it and say not to reinstall it after CS3 works too. So I think I am finally up and running and just installed Kaspersky for virus control. Good luck all…stick with it! At least Adobe tech support still uses English as a first language techs!

My problems seemed to run around the acrobat install and as you have noted revolve around the permissions. In software it is common to test your product prior to shipping and test to break is the norm. Why does not everyone who has suffered financial loss just join together in a law suite to recover their losses? From the masses of complaint on google that would only be a small number??? of customers wishing to take this action. When the writ lands on the ceo’s desk the QA manager will get a call, this will then be passed down the line to every incompetant that has cauased the problem, Version 1.005 and guess what a simple install/de install program will appear in weeks.

    Hi!

I almost read all the lines in this highly useful blog.
I am not sure if it is the right place to ask about an “uninstalling” question.
(If not, please direct me to the right place.)

I installed a CS3 Web Premium on my XP in my D: drive. (I am not so sure if this D: choice is the reason of my troubles!)
But it lacked the InDesign as one said in the above lines so I wanted to try CS3 Master.

Before trying the CS3 Master, I uninstalled the Web Premium from the “Add-Delete Programs.”

    It was a success!
No problems occured during removing the program.

But, after that, I saw that, on my Start Menu-Programs there still was the name Adobe Web Premium CS3! And under that Adobe Acrobat 8 Professional, Adobe Distiller 8 and finally Adobe LiveCycle Designer 8.0 were smiling at me!

I wanted to clean them with the WebCleanCS3 (or whatsoever) but no result!

I installed the CS3 Web Premium again hoping to uninstall again -this time with these 3 programs.
    Then uninstalled again…
    But no way!

They are still there and I can’t find a way to remove them!

I would appreciate any ideas to show me a way.

  108. @smacktock, Are they working shortcuts? Meaning, did the programs get uninstalled and perhaps the shortcuts weren’t removed in the process of removing Web Premium? If that’s not the case, then obviously there are some issues with the uninstaller. BTW, installing CS3 Master over CS3 Web Premium *shouldn’t* cause any problems. I installed InDesign CS3 alongside Web Premium CS3 without any problems. Installing the Master Collection over an install of Web Premium CS3 shouldn’t have any adverse effects. If someone knows otherwise, certainly let me know.

It is very difficult to uninstall the adobe projects on a windows platform.
adobe have an uninstall tool, when you use it according to the documentation it does not work.
You will need to use option 4(undocumented).
You need to start your system in maintenance mode, disable all start up programs using msconfig(now there is a clue that something dirty is going on) use the clean up tool (option4) restart your system in maintenance mode, ensure that start up progs are still disabled and start your install. Phone adobe in the states, cs3 installation is specifically mentioned as a ‘press button option’ and they have some very knowledgable people there( so this must be a very rare fault). Manufacturers who in attempting to protect their IP, by install virus quality protection should be prohibited.
The software purchase attached to an install should be (and is)validated online. The product was sold by adobe, to a dealer or user with a unique reg num, if the number is used more than once by a different user little alarm bells should be rung. If it looks like a virus, smells like a virus and acts like a virus it must be a ??? or alternatively a graphic designers program.

  111. crap in the newer versions of Creative Suite. I understand that there’s a huge cost barrier to buying Photoshop and/or Creative Suite… but it’s because it is so widely “shared” on the internet that Adobe had to put in counter-measures. Obviously, it hasn’t stopped the proliferation of cracked versions of the software. But, it is making it more difficult for legitimate owners to buy/install the software.

  113. @john, while I agree things *should* just work, the overly complicated install process could be chalked up to a couple of things: 1) blending of adobe & macromedia technology; and 2) piracy.

#1. CS3 represents the first time Adobe and Macromedia software have been released under the Adobe banner. I’m sure some of the Macromedia stuff was re-architected to be more in line with Adobe’s stuff, but I’m sure it wasn’t an easy process…

#2. Piracy is the main reason why there’s all this activation crap in the newer versions of Creative Suite. I understand that there’s a huge cost barrier to buying Photoshop and/or Creative Suite… but it’s because it is so widely “shared” on the internet that Adobe had to put in counter-measures. I thought that on this site was a posting by a senior guy at Adobe who is familiar with the product problems and has offered to help anyone with them. I cannot find it now but Chris will be aware (Is it Barry Hills?)
Ring the US support team, I rang the UK team, they had never heard of my problem, it had never happend before etc. The I rang the states (lets try the second rate service I have been warned to expect as I did not have a UK ‘support contract’. A guy who certainly had heard about the problem, knew all about it and how to fix it talked me through the process(Which I think I described in an earlier post) and it worked a treat. (many thanks guys) As for the UK support I would ship them out for a retraining session in somewhere nice like Guantanamo.
