Yesterday, PowerServe joined the National Association of Photoshop Professionals as a Corporate Member. Personally, I’ve wanted to join NAPP for quite some time. I’ve enjoyed PhotoshopUser, the organization’s magazine, for quite some time.Members get discounts on seminars, books, products, etc. Have you thought about joining?

Network Solutions Redesigns
It looks like Network Solutions just launched a new look to their website. A quick glance at the code shows the layout is mostly done without tables… (and it almost validates as HTML 4.01 Transitional) …but I’m not sure I like the new direction.
I liked the simplicity of the previous design. The new look seems forced. The gradients used in the top nav remind me of Office XP. The mouseover menus seem half done. I think the layout would work a little bit better if it were centered. I’m going to assume they needed to force a left-align to get some of the menu stuff to work.
The new layout is definitely cleaner than before. They’ve consolidated the homepage significantly, and it works in their favor. The homepage is much more organized too. I think clutter is what kills sites like GoDaddy.com… They try to jam way too much onto the homepage. NetworkSolutions definitely did the right thing by taking the “less is more” approach here.
Overall, I think the new look is okay… but I’m not overwhelmed by it. I’m most happy to see that they are adopting standards in this new layout.
It’s definitely a benefit to the Web Standards cause to have high-profile sites such as NetworkSolutions.com adopting web standards in their layouts.

ActiveSync 3.8 Now Available
Not sure when it was posted, but just saw that ActiveSync 3.8 is now available for download from the Windows Mobile website.

Macromedia Studio 8
Macromedia announced a new version of its Studio suite of application that will soon be available. This suite, which contains Dreamweaver, Flash Professional, Fireworks, Contribute and FlashPaper is available for preorder now, and will become available mid-September.
“The new release improves workflow features and includes new video encoding tools, new CSS enhancements, visual authoring tools for XML, and new tools for authoring and testing mobile content, said Jim Guerard, VP of Product Management for the tools business at Macromedia.

A Quick Glimpse
I mentioned last night that changes were coming. I wanted to show off a small glimpse of a design I am working on for a new version of cdharrison.com. It may be a while before it gets implemented, because I still need to work through some technology considerations before I take the plunge and invest in building out this new layout.
I am going to take a new approach with this new design. Traditionally, I have isolated my blog away from my content. This new design sets the blog as its primary focus, because, let’s face it – I’m not really trying to get new business from my site anymore. I haven’t bothered to update the portfolio in God knows how long. You get the drift.

Thoughts on Fatherhood
Kim is almost halfway through the pregnancy already. It’s hard to believe it’s been nearly 20 weeks already.
I’m anxious, excited, enthusiastic about the birth of our son. I hope that I will be a good father to him. I hope that I will be a better husband to his mother. It’s an amazing amount of responsibility to bring someone into this world, and here I am – standing here with Kim – ready to take this intense leap of faith, by bringing little Tyler into this world. Yep, we’ve decided on Tyler as his first name. Don’t ask me about a middle name. We can’t seem to make up our minds. We’ve tossed around the idea of using Douglas (my middle name), Alexander (Kim hates it), Andrew, among others.
There is a lot I have to do before he gets here. I need to finish cleaning the house; paint a mural in the baby’s room; get new carpeting;
get baby furnitureassemble baby furniture; etc.I am going to be one busy papa. It’ll be worth it though. The hard work. The sacrifices. All to bring a new life into this world. I hope Kim and I will do a good job as new parents. Wish us luck.

Changes are Coming.
I am considering some new directions for this blog and my website, cdharrison.com. I am currently investigating several new blogging packages, including Movable Type, WordPress, BlogCFM, and a few others. I think Blogger has worked so far for me, but it lacks several features that I feel a Blog application must have for me.
- I have to manually insert Keywords into each post.
- There are no categories.
- I can’t easily integrate it into my ColdFusion-based website.
- No calendar option for browsing posts.
I am leaning towards BlogCFM, because it is 1) free, and 2) offers a lot of high-end features that I could really use. It does address most of my concerns (see above), which is nice. I feel comfortable enough working with ColdFusion code to think that I could add some of the additional areas to the code to my blog, should I choose to use the software.
I am also trying out a new stand-alone application for posting to my Blog: w.Bloggar. It’s a freeware app that integrates well with Blogger, Movable Type, and more. I’m pretty happy with it so far. I’m very comfortable drafting up posts solely in code, and this app allows me to do that. I can also access previous posts very easily, upload files via FTP, and more through the app.
