  • Do everything via IM

Wow… so Will just told me about imified and here I am trying it out. It’s an IM-based service that works with Basecamp, Backpack, Blogger, Google Calendar, MovableType, WordPress, and more… If this works like I hope it will… man oh man… IM just went from productivity killer to productivity enhancer.

  • Career Day

Just a quick note to let you all know I will be speaking at the 2007 Career Day at Evans High School – in Evans, Georgia – on Wednesday, February 7th. I’ll be speaking to three classes about the kind of work that I do. To be honest, it’s a little intimidating. Some kids’ professional future might be impacted by what I might say. Thanks again to Mrs. April Nunnallee for inviting me. (It’s hard to believe we worked together over 6 years ago…and now she’s a teacher!)

Regardless, it’ll be fun to get out of the office for the morning. I’ll post about the experience on Wednesday afternoon. I really need to do more stuff like this.

If you were a student, what might you want to learn from someone coming in for Career Day?

  • Can you digg it?

Well, a few bad apples have ruined it for the rest. Intent on gaming the system, some “diggers” have forced the digg.com staff to remove features from the site in order to maintain some semblance of control on the site. You can read more about the changes here: “A couple changes…”

Digg.com, in a perfect world, is designed to be a democratic news publisher… Popular news gets pushed to the homepage where it gains even more exposure. Links that have been “dugg” to the homepage usually result in thousands of visits, if not hundreds of thousands of visits.  It’s probably safe to say, that in most cases, digg.com works. But, with anything in life, there are always those intent on manipulating the system for their own gains.

I admit, removing the Top Diggers List is a minor thing. But the fact that it had to be done in the first place is sad reflection on the efforts spammers will make to hijack anything they can.

  • Ma.gnolia Firefox Plugin

    Ma.gnolia

Over at FirefoxPro.net, they’ve got a Firefox plugin for Ma.gnolia that I just started using. I’ve been using the bookmarklets (Snap Mark and Mark in Magnolia) for quite some time, but it’s a less than elegant solution. This plugin adds a small Ma.gnolia icon to your toolbar, making it easier to bookmark sites.

Before I started using Ma.gnolia, I used Del.icio.us to manage my bookmarks, and I used the del.icio.us plugin for Firefox. When I made the switch away from Del.icio.us, I missed the convenience that plugin offered. But now… Ma.gnolia Firefox plugin FTW!

  • Color Shuffles

    the iPod Shuffle in color.

Wow. Apple released the iPod shuffle in multiple colors today. I still love my little silver shuffle, though, I can’t lie… these colors are mesmerizing. Add to that, the fact you get the new headphones with these… Man… I love the color switcher they built into the site to play off the different colors.

Will we see an orange iPod nano soon? Or a RED iPod shuffle?

  • Five more things you (probably) don’t know about me

I love memes…. Even though I’ve already done this one, I figured: “What could answering this one more time hurt?” Thanks for the tag, Senia.

    1. I used to wrestle in high school. I was in the Heavyweight division (215-275lbs). During my tenth grade year, I was wrestling a kid from Menchville High School in a tournament and broke his leg to win the gold medal. Said kid beat me in my first ever match months prior to our rematch. Beating him (in this way) was bittersweet.
    2. I broke my arm when I was four. I was jumping on some boxes … specifically one containing a box spring mattress, and fell on a stone with my elbow.
    3. I’m way into Heroes. Matter of fact, I started contributing posts to The 10th Wonder because I love the show so much. You should check that site out… I love it.
    4. I lived in Germany for eight years, and all I learned while I was there was how to say the curse words.
    5. I’m not really that great with words… I’m bad at communicating. (Imagine that!) But it’s something I’m trying desperately to work on.
  • Microsoft Asking for IE8 Suggestions

Microsoft starts gathering IE 8 input – Microsoft has contacted a number of beta testers to seek input it will use to customize Internet Explorer (IE) 8, the next version of its Web browser. IE 8 is expected to ship 18 to 24 months after IE 7, which Microsoft released last fall, making Version 8.0 a 2008/2009 deliverable, if Microsoft sticks to reported plans. – Mary Jo Foley, ZDNet.com

  • Housecleaning

I’ve been messing with the site a bit, so if things look screwed up, forgive me.

Seeing as this isn’t that far of a departure from what I already had on this site, I’m considering this Version 13.1.0. I’m trying to clean up my templates, add some additional functionality that I’ve been missing, and add little enhancements here and there.

Right now, I’m adding a number of customizations that would be considered transcendent css… It’ll make the browsing experience in modern browsers a lot better than if you’re still using Internet Explorer 6, Netscape 6 or lower, etc. The decision to go this route was dictated by browsing statistics on the site. Most people that come here use Firefox and/or Safari. Yes, IE accounts for a significant part of the traffic, but honestly… if you’re still using an older version of IE it’s time to upgrade. You’ll still be able to access the content here even if you’re using an older browser, but things might look a bit messed up. Take the good with the bad, I suppose…

This is Phase 1… Phase 2 will include the switch over to the Sandbox theme framework. Sandbox supports rich semantic markup, microformats, etc. and I can’t think of a reason not to use it… I’ve already started the process of converting the site over to Sandbox, so you can expect that switch to be made soon. The decision behind this switch is based on making the site more forward compatible. Mozilla has already announced that Firefox 3 will have built-in support for microformats. I hope the Internet Explorer team will follow suit with IE8. We’ll see.

  • Cornered

On Monday, Kim and I found out that we’re being forced to move. Fortunately, it’s only a minor move that only entails us changing our physical address. Since we moved into our new home in June, we’ve lived under the assumption that we lived on Niagra Falls – the street the front of our house faces. Unfortunately, Columbia Count had other things in mind. Evidently, because our driveway faces Rainbow Falls our address actually belongs on that street. The reason – we were told – for this decision, had to do with emergency services. All homes are to have addresses on the road their driveway faces… This makes it easier for the Fire Department, Police, etc. to find your home. I guess there’s no arguing with that logic.

So, we now get to deal with changing our address on everything
