Posts of a more personal nature.

  • Hell hath frozen over.

I’m not proud of it, but I went ahead and setup a MySpace page: http://www.myspace.com/cdharrisonxp. This is the third time I’ve had an account… and there’s no telling how long I might keep it. I used Mike Davidson’s Hacking a More Tasteful MySpace to make my profile page not as ugly as what they give as a default. I’m not sure how much I will use it… And to be honest, I’m using it because some friends/neighbors are using it…

  • Happy Holidays

It feels weird to be unplugged for extended amounts of time. I’ve only checked my email a handful of times since I took time off from work on December 21st. I don’t go back until January 2nd, but the time off has definitely been good for me. Sleeping in, hanging out with friends and playing video games are things I’ve done without this past year as work demands have made it near impossible to have any semblance of a “real life”.

Since I didn’t get around to doing it earlier this week… Merry Belated Christmas… hope you were able to spend time with friends and family. Both my family and Kim’s live here locally, so we’re able to spend it with them. It was Tyler’s second Christmas, but the first where he was fully aware of what was going on around him. Next year will be much more interesting with him, I’d imagine.

I had a good Christmas. I was fortunate enough to receive a Logitech Harmony 670 Universal Remote, tons of giftcards, Heroes Season 1 DVD set, Lost Season 3 DVD Set, Brain Age 1 & 2 for the Nintendo DS, several Star Wars Clonetrooper figures (including a hard to find Clone Commander #33 figure). All in all, I had a great Christmas.

I hope you and yours have a safe and memorable New Years. I’m sure by this weekend I’ll be raring to get back to being productive at work.

  • Sandboxing

I finally took the plunge and switched over to using Sandbox for WordPress. I’m hoping to have some time over the coming weeks to apply my own design to it… for the time being, this one will work. Stay tuned.

  • Year 29

    birthday cake

Today, I am 29 years old. I don’t feel any older, but the ever-appearing gray hairs I’m getting say otherwise. If you had asked me ten years ago where I thought I’d be at Age 29, I doubt I would have been able to say that I’d be where I am.

  • Be Thankful

On this day, we are reminded to be thankful. I am thankful for my wife and son, my family, my friends, my job and awesome coworkers, and for God – without Him, we have nothing.

    Happy Thanksgiving, everyone.

  • Minor Updates

    Some minor site-related news:

    • Decreasing Load Time – I’ve been trying to get the site to run faster. I’ve installed several caching solutions (including WP Super Cache) and enabled articles to be gzipped, and so far the site seems more responsive to me. I’m hoping to have some time to play this weekend and remove some of the queries. If you’ve been to my site before, did you notice whether the site has been quicker to load?
    • Comment Timeouts – I am now using James McKay’s Comment Timeout Plugin for WordPress on the site. What this means to you, is that all posts will now have an expiration date for comments. If a post is popular and receives more comments than usual, it’ll stay open for comments for up to 6 months after the last comment made. For all other posts, commenting will time out after 60 days. I felt like this addition was necessary because older posts tend to be breeding grounds for comment spam, and some topics simply need to be closed…
    • Stylesheet Updates – The site will most likely appear broken in areas over the next couple of weeks. I’m going to be working on simplifying the underlying CSS of my site in preparation for a Version XVI launch towards the beginning of the year.
  • Pushin’ Pixels

Pushin’ Pixels is a new tumblr-powered blog I’ve setup, to help eliminate some of the extra “fluff” I’ve been introducing to this site. From now on asides, quotes, links, etc. will be featured on Pushin’ Pixels. This will help me to refocus on adding more in-depth articles in the future. Speaking of which, my schedule at work has been really hectic this month, which is why posting’s been nearly non-existent. I expect that to change soon. Things tend to slow down over the holidays, and I’m more than ready for a bit of a slowdown after the pace I’ve been working this year.

  • Catching Up

Posting been light over the past couple of weeks because of work, the Webmaster Jam Session, and various other things. (*cough* Halo 3 *cough*) I’ll resume a more regular publishing schedule this week, and hopefully will find the time to post some new themes I promised to make available a while back.

I’m working on integrating the color pink into various aspects of my design as a part of Pink for October. The whole point of going “Pink for October” is to bring attention to Breast Cancer Awareness Month. In this day and age, very few people haven’t been touched by cancer in some form or fashion.

Halo 3 is fantastic. Nuff said.

  • Jammin’ in Dallas

I arrived at the hotel late last night. My trip took longer than expected, and once I got in Dallas, I got lost. (Go figure.) After driving up and down the one way streets, I accidentally found the hotel.

So far, I’ve had breakfast with Jonathan Snook and Jason Beaird. Met Bryan Veloso. Watched Jared Spool’s keynote presentation: “The Dawning of the Age of Experience”. Met Steven Ray, whom I have chatted with via Facebook, Twitter and more… Met a reader of my site: Luke Minker. (Nice to meet you, Luke. No one’s ever come up to me and said they read my site before!) And Rob Weychert’s “A Field Guide to Design Inspiration” was great.

So far I’ve had a blast, and it’s just getting started!
