Happy Birthday, Wii.

MarioKart Wii

It’s hard to believe that the Nintendo Wii came out a year ago today. I initially wrote off the console as a child’s toy, but I’ve grown to love it more than any other gaming console I’ve owned. What I love most about the Wii is its ability to engage non-traditional players. Whether you’re six years old or ninety-six, the Wii isn’t intimidating.

Nintendo: Bravo for making a console that has succeeded in bringing gaming to a new level. Happy Birthday.

Yeah it definitely doesn’t seem that long ago.

I agree that the Wii attracts non-traditional players, but do you think that detracts from some of the more hardcore gamers?

  2. Does the Wii detract from some of the more hardcore gamers? I don’t think so. The few people I know that would fall into that category gladly own a Wii, especially because of the Virtual Console…

Yes I recall that night when we were leaving work, You stood there and made fun of Ian and me for going to stand in line to get one. As I recall the words were something to the effect of you would buy it for your son cause you have a real system. DA HA

  6. @Wyatt: Asshat. I still love ya though, bro. I’m glad to be wrong in this case. The Wii’s turned out to be a pretty sweet gaming system. Between playing new games and downloaded content on the Virtual Console it’s kept me plenty busy. Except, of course, when Halo 3 has my attention…

I still haven’t been convinced the Wii is that great. Granted the only game (non-Wii Sports, seriously it seems like that’s the only game most people have) I’ve played was Zelda, and the Wii-mote was OK but didn’t enhance the experience enough to make me want to buy one. Had a long discussion on the way back home for Thanksgiving with my roommate and his two brothers about the Wii vs. other traditional consoles. I still think that the normal controllers provide the most room for competition. The Wii-mote was too sporadic for me and wouldn’t always read correctly. Maybe I had to get used to it, but I’d rather the game respond all the time by doing one action when I hit one button. To each his own though I guess.

  10. Ben, I hear ya. I personally prefer using the XBOX 360 controller to the Wiimote. But, in games like Wii Play, Carnival Games, Mario Party 8, etc… the Wiimote adds a lot. In fact, I’d even say it makes the games more immersive because you’re moving around.

So for fun, interactive games that can be enjoyed by a wide range, the Wii is great. But if you’re looking for serious competitive play, traditional consoles / controllers is the way to go?

  13. That’s be my assessment, yeah. And it’s exactly why I currently have a 360 and a Wii. ;)
