Through the Looking Glass

I didn’t think it was possible, but Lost outdid itself last night. The Season 3 Finale was all that I had hoped it would be and more.

If you don’t want spoilers, avoid reading anything further.

Through the Looking Glass

What can I say? I never expected a flash-forward. The whole time I was watching Jack, I thought we were witnessing a breakdown that had occurred before he was on the island. The clues? The appearance of Jack on an Oceanic Airline flight. (Which, according the Oceanic Airline website, was shut down following the crash of Flight 815.) The way he interacted with his wife… The fact he mentioned his father was still alive more than once. It wasn’t until the very end, when Kate showed up, that I realized we weren’t viewing the past. This twist opened up a can of worms…

  • Who was Naomi, and if she wasn’t working work for Penny, who did she work for?

My theory is Naomi was probably working for Charles Widmore and/or the Dharma Initiative. There is quite a bit of speculation surrounding Widmore and his ties to the Dharma Initiative. Finding Desmond was consuming the life of Penny, his daughter. Widmore could end that quest by delivering Desmond to her in a body bag. Penny confirmed while talking to Charlie in The Looking Glass station, that she had no idea who Naomi was. Why would Naomi have the picture of Desmond and Penny together? Charles Widmore could have access to the photo…

The only evidence that suggest that Dharma isn’t trying to retake the island is the fact that Naomi seemed genuinely surprised when Hugo told her they were survivors of Flight 815. She mentioned they were dead… they found the plane with no survivors… I can’t figure out why she would tell him that, unless she was trying to eliminate any hope he and others might have had of being rescued.

  • Why does Ben want to protect the island? Can we believe anything at all he says?

He tried to talk Jack out of calling Naomi’s ship. He told them that Naomi worked for someone who wanted the island and would destroy anyone on it. Why is Ben hell-bent on keeping the island a secret?

  • Who is Jacob?

He’s been mentioned several times in the past. We caught a glimpse of him in last week’s episode, and he was briefly mentioned again in the finale. Who is Jacob? What is Jacob? Hopefully Season 4 will shed some light on this.

  • What’s the deal with Mikhail, and is he dead?

The man’s had his eardrums blown out, harpooned, and now detonated. Is he dead? What makes him so special that he’s so difficult to kill?

  • Is Jack’s father dead?

I have no idea what to think about this one… In the flash-forward, Jack mentioned his father being alive twice. The first time, he challenged the new Chief of Surgery to get his father and bring him in and see if Jack was drunker than he was… and the second time came when Jack tried to get a prescription filled with a scrip from his father’s office. When the pharmacists mentioned she was going to call his office to confirm the prescription, Jack mentioned he was away on vacation… So is Dr. Christian Shephard really dead? And does he play a much larger role in all of this than any of us might suspect?

  • Why bother bringing Walt back?

Seriously, why even bother? It was silly, especially considering it was so noticeable he had aged. I understand he was a manifestation of the Black Smoke, but I’m not it made sense to use him, especially with him being older.sure his appearance was really necessary, or if they’ll ever explain it, but it was a really odd moment in the episode.

  • If the island is unjammed, who else might be able to see it/communicate to it now?

I’m probably reaching here, but I think it’s a valid question. We know Penny had people scanning that area looking for Desmond… Could others be looking in that area as well?

  • Ben and the Others know that Juliet betrayed them, and the Losties know she can’t fully be trusted… What part will she play going forward?

Juliet and Jack shared a touching moment before she and Sawyer headed to the beach to rescue Jin, Bernard and Sayid. She’s shown that she’s willing to go to great lengths in order to get off the island… How do we know that this isn’t all still part of Ben’s plan?

  • What’s the deal with Richard?

The man’s been on the island for 20+ years and hasn’t aged a bit. Is that a product of the island? We know he’s left the island before… He’s the only one so far that we’ve really seen challenge Ben in anyway. PLUS he helped Locke gain the upper hand on Ben… He’s one of the most mysterious characters left on the island…

Anyways… I could probably keep going on with my speculation… but now seems like a good place to stop. What do you think about some of the things I brought up? What do you think is in store for us when Season 4 of Lost begins?

I have to say that for once I saw it coming… The hints were subtle but I know the producers are too careful to have let Jack use a very new cell phone model in a flash-back scene… another thing that I noticed that I haven’t seen discussed elsewhere is that while in the hospital Jack is referred to as a hero “two times over” or something to that effect… while this could have just been referring to the boy and his mother who were rescued from the car crash… I think it was a reference to his back story (at this point) in leading to their rescue from the island…

As always… they answer one question by raising 2 or 3 more. I have to say that the season finished much stronger than it started this year… It’s going to be a long wait until January. I’m seriously considering getting the dvds to rewatch the first 2 seasons…

  2. I watched the episode again last night and agree with you… some of the stuff was subtle, but did provide hints that it was the future. I kinda smacked myself for not picking up on the cellphone right away…

I’ve got Season 1 and 2 on DVD … plus I’ve got Season 2 and 3 from iTunes… it’s nice to be able to go back and watch the episodes at my leisure. I highly recommend it!
