Areas of My Expertise

The Areas of My Expertise

Over the past year, I’ve become quite a fan of John Hodgman. You probably know him as “PC” from Apple’s Mac vs PC ads. Or maybe you’ve seen him on The Daily Show as a Subject Expert. Or maybe you’ve read articles he’s written in the New York Times. (He’s a busy guy, seriously.)

Well, someone’s been good this year, because Santa convinced Apple to give away Hodgman’s book: “The Areas of My Expertise” for free on iTunes.

If that didn’t convince you to check it out, here’s more about the book:

Audiobook Description: In the great tradition of the American almanac, The Areas of My Expertise is a brilliant and hilarious compendium of handy reference tables, fascinating trivia, and sage wisdom on all topics large and small. Although best sellers such as Poor Richard’s Almanack and The Book of Lists were certainly valuable, they also were largely true. Here is a different kind of handy desk reference, one in which all of the historical oddities and amazing true facts are sifted through the singular, illuminating imagination of John Hodgman, which is the nice way of saying: He made it all up.

What Others Say:

  • “One of the funniest and most entertaining books to play on readers’ imaginations in recent memory. Highly recommended.” – Library Journal
  • “For the hyper-well-read fans of publications like McSweeney’s this is a treasure trove of twisted absurdist miscellany.” – Publishers Weekly

So go download it already. Or you could go read more about the book here. Or you could read John Hodgman’s blog. Or you could buy the book.

Okay, I’ll stop now.

No doubt many of the “facts” he made up will be passed around several times as if they are really true and snopes.com will have to add an entire section just for “Hodgmans”.

When we hear something that sounds funny, we’ll be asking “is that true, or is that a Hodgman?”

  6. lol, no doubt. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed it. I’ll probably pick up the book over the holidays if I get the chance.

I am slightly freaked out by the amount of “likes” we have in common: Heroes, Lost, John Hodgman. I hear him a lot in a favorite podcast of mine, the Sound Of Young America. He tours sometimes with a musician named Jonathan Coulton who is really funny. Have a great holiday.

  13. hehe…great minds think alike, right?
