The Good Fight

The war against comment spam is an uphill battle. WordPress users have a number of tools at their disposal that help with combat it. Based on Lorelle’s declaration of war on spam, I’ve decided to take the same steps here on my site.

Comments are no longer moderated. And you don’t have to be a registered user. If it’s a legitimate comment, it gets posted right away. If it’s spam, one of three tools are going to get medieval on your buttocks: Akismet, Bad Behavior and Spam Karma 2.

So far, since going forward with this test last week, I’ve had zero false positives. I don’t know how long this system will remain this rock solid… but I’ve got high hopes for it.

SCORE ONE FOR THE GOOD GUYS! This is fabulous. Your post makes my war on comment spam totally worthy.

And on behalf of your readers, who might not understand what your action really means to them, thank you.

Remember, Akismet is a learning tool so marking any comment spam that gets through sends a note to Akismet to help them learn what is comment spam and what is not. We still have a year or so before the battle against comment spam is closer to perfection as the comment spammers are always trying to beat the system. So far, the folks behind Akismet and other WordPress comment spam fighting tools are 2 steps ahead of them.

Talk about a quick response… ;) Ironically, your comment got held up for moderation. Go figure…

I’ve yet to have any spam get through Akismet, which is awesome. I highly suggest having that installed no matter who you are or what blogging platform you’re using… The addition of Spam Karma 2 and Bad Behavior have done wonders to limit/detect spam as well. It’s nice to know that with these tools are our disposal, we can control/limit/eliminate comment spam.

Nope, didn’t catch ya. I think it may have caught Lorelle because I had Spam Karma 2 set to “Total Beatch” mode. I’ve since eased up on those settings. Plus, you didn’t add a bunch of porn links to the comment… :)

It works great, doesn’t it? With the the other two plugins running along side it (Akismet and Bad Behavior) I have yet to have any spam get through, and I have left comments unmoderated for 3 weeks now… I’d rate that “test” as a success at this point. :)
